Solar powered traffic signals are used in many tropical countries like India where electricity supply is not available at places or is erratic. Since traffic signaling systems have to very reliable, usually a hybrid system using both solar power and grid electricity are used. In countries where there is less sunlight, they may be used for warning signal lights. Solar powered traffic signals are usually designed for 14 hours continuous operation and 10 hours operation in blinking mode (usually when there is less traffic at night). Like solar garden lighting, solar traffic signals have an array of ultra bright long life LEDs. The power consumption of these LED is also much lower. However the solar panel for converting solar energy to electrical energy is usually larger and more efficient. The electrical energy is stored in sealed maintenance free lead acid batteries. The operation of the traffic signal is programmed into a microcontroller/PLC. There is a provision for manual operation also. The signal is visible for a distance of up to 500m. Manufacturers are trying to modify existing traffic signals for solar applications. The national energy policy in India suggests the use of solar powered traffic signals. A subsidy for use of solar powered traffic signals is sanctioned by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources. Most of the solar traffic signals installed in India are supplied by BEL (Bharat Electronics), Tata BP Solar and Luminelle (in Delhi). Most of the solar traffic signals in India are installed in Karnataka since the state government has promoted use of solar energy for various applications. Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Haryana are other states where solar traffic signals are likely to be installed. |
